Which Form 990 Do We File? Self-Check

Tool · Last reviewed October 20, 2026 · Legal and tax review: pending

Answer a few questions to see which annual return your organization is likely to file and when it is due. This runs in your browser; nothing is sent anywhere. It is a general guide based on the IRS Form 990 series page.

1. What kind of organization is it?
2. What are the organization’s gross receipts for the year? (Gross receipts are all receipts before subtracting any costs. For the e-postcard, use the normal level over several years.)
3. What were total assets at the end of the year?
4. In which month does the fiscal year end?

General information. Some organizations have special rules (for example certain supporting organizations, sponsors of donor-advised funds, and organizations with unrelated business income, which also file Form 990-T). Gross receipts for the e-postcard are measured “normally,” over several years. Due dates shown move to the next business day when they fall on a weekend or legal holiday. Confirm with the IRS instructions or a professional.
